Blimpie! You Have A Service Star!

I stopped for a quick sandwich at my local Blimpie (Cascade Township, Grand Rapids, Michigan) the other day, and to my surprise, I found a service star!

The young guy who was in charge of adding toppings to my sandwich was totally immersed in creating a masterpiece just for me.  As I selected each of my toppings, he responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!” or “Great!”

Instead of slapping the toppings on the sandwich, he piled them on the chopping board in front of him.  After he made sure I had everything I wanted, he proceeded to dice them into small pieces and spread them evenly across the length of the sandwich.  No doubt, he wanted me to enjoy a taste of each of the flavors in every bite.

When he was finished, he cut the sandwich and presented it for my approval.  “How does that look?” he asked.  After I approved he wrapped it and we moved to the cash register.  I used a coupon as part of my payment.  After he counted my change, he reached under the counter and gave me a new sheet of coupons to use for future visits.

This was one of the most delightful service experiences I’ve ever had in the fast food industry!

Chances are this young guy has much higher aspirations than slinging subs for a living.  But he chose to make the absolute most of what he was doing in the moment.  He worked as if he was the head chef in a five star restaurant.  He took pride in creating a masterpiece of a sandwich; exactly the way the customer wanted it.
